Our spelling curriculum is primarily delivered through:
- The learning of high frequency words with irregular spelling
- The learning of common spelling rules and patterns
High Frequency Words with Irregular Spelling
These are words that are used a lot by children in their writing but which have irregular or ‘tricky’ spellings. e.g. friend.
At Trinity, we ask that parents help children learn these types of words at home through our Deep Sea Spellers Programme. Children are tested weekly on their level and move through the stages once all spellings are mastered. The levels are attached below and we highly recommend downloading the Squeebles Spelling App, which has all levels stored to help with motivation for practice at home. We do, of course, immerse children in these high frequency words, with lots of them on display in the classroom and on word mats during extended writing tasks. Links are also drawn in phonics sessions, where children have the chance to write and practice the spellings of words they are learning to read.
Common Spelling Rules and Patterns:
In class, children are taught common spelling rules. These common rules include adding the suffix 'ed' at the end of a verb for regular past tense and the discussion of when to use the suffix 'tion' or 'sion' at the end of a word. These rules and patterns, including when they are to be taught, are set out in the new national curriculum.
Once learned, children are encouraged to apply their spellings in all ‘big writes’ (independent writing) and teacher feedback encourages children to take increasing responsibility for correcting spellings themselves.
Our Policy on the Marking of Spelling:
Teacher professional judgement and knowledge of each child will always dictate the extent of spelling correction expected. However, as a general guide, we expect children to correctly spell up to the point learned. Misspelt words are highlighted and should be corrected by the child.
